Oakbrook sixth-grade teacher and his classAn Oakbrook Elementary teacher will be honored this year as one of the state’s top math and science teacher.

Sixth grade teacher William Mader has been named a nominee and state finalist for the President Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Mader, who was nominated by Oakbook principal Dr. Linda Schneider-Rediske, will be by the Michigan Science Teachers Association at their annual conference in the spring and at the Network of Michigan Educators Annual Banquet in Lansing in December.

“I enjoy my time teaching my students a great deal and this is where I find the most meaning in what I do,” he said. “My best reward is knowing I've done my best to teach my students the importance of learning and hopefully inspired some of them to seek a career in science for themselves.”

The honor was based on a rigorous application process, which included a lengthy essay, letters of reference and a video of Mader teaching his class.
